I’ll be hanging out from 2pm to six-ish with at least a copy of Crows. I will figure that game out!

Please join us as we slay the beast. He’s mean and loud and made of balloons. He must not survive the convention!

At 1:45 we’re going to stomp on the giant balloon. Please come down and stomp with us. If you feel so inclined, put a couple of bucks in the tip hat to support the Education Project for Homeless Youth.
EVERYONE! We are excited to say that U-Con can accept credit cards this year for sales at registration. However, in a sad turn of events the food stand won’t be able to accept credit cards. We are relying on these food sales to keep this space affordable, so we appreciate your business and apologize for the inconvenience.
Yey! The food stand CAN accept credit and debit cards! Registration is also successfully taking credit and debit cards! It’s a credit and debit smorgasbord!
Phone (voicemail): 734-707-UCON (8266)
(Please leave a message with a phone number for a return call.)
Registration is located in the lobby of Eagle Crest (not the hotel lobby).

We have worked with the Eagle Crest chef to create a menu with a variety of options at reasonable prices. Any money you spend on food from the stand at the hotel will go directly to U-Con and help defray our costs. Copies of the menu are available at the registration desk.

With U-Con immediately following the summer convention season, many of those attending may have had recent and harrowing interactions with the vicious (and viscous) plague known as the Con Crud. Because we like you and want you to remain healthy – and because we want to remain healthy ourselves – we would like to share the following advice for maintaining your health during the convention:
1. Sanitize. Hand sanitizer isn’t 100% effective, but there is a truckload of evidence that it does prevent the spread of disease, both to you and to the next person you shake hands with. While an excellent stopgap measure, sanitizer isn’t everything. The absolute best way to stop the contraction and spread of disease is to wash your hands. All the time. Every time you eat. Every time you use the restroom. Every time you have a break in game play or between a slot. Much like gnomes, the only way to stop the germs from spreading is to kill them, as frequently as possible.
2. Eat, sleep, and shower. Your body is designed to deal with illness. The human immune system is an incredibly effective machine when it comes to destroying invaders – but it can only be effective if it’s properly cared for. It needs fuel, downtime, and maintenance. For proper fueling, you should be eating at least two meals a day, and if you want to be really on top of your game, at least one of those meals should be breakfast. If you don’t have time for breakfast, either because you want that extra half hour of sleep or because oversleeping is a thing, pack your gaming bag with granola bars or the like to give yourself something to eat early on or if you start to drag during that early slot.
Downtime is also required in the form of sleep. A number of convention tip blogs try to assign a particular number to how much you should be sleeping, but to be honest, the amount of sleep each person needs is variable. Instead, you should base the amount of convention sleep on the amount of sleep you usually get. At an absolute minimum, you should get the same amount of sleep that you get on a “well-rested” work night. If you are going to spend more hours per day at the convention than you normally would at your job during a full work day, you should add an hour or so to that amount. If you plan on playing Werewolf all night regardless of this advice, at least don’t schedule anything in the morning that you can’t miss so that you can sleep in if you feel you need to.
Lastly, properly maintain your hygiene while you’re at the convention. This includes showering at least once a day, brushing your teeth, and sanitizing as described above. Our immune systems can work far more effectively if we help them out by reducing the amount of invaders going into the system – not to mention the “refreshing” feeling that typically accompanies these activities.
3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. This means water, folks. I know that the Mountain Dew is tastier and keeps you awake, and I’ve been there – being alert makes you a more engaged player or DM. But. You’re likely going to be using your voice a lot more during the convention than you will during a normal weekend, and nothing – and I mean nothing – is better for maintaining your voice for three straight days of talking than water. If water is a taste issue for you, adding Crystal Light or the like to it isn’t terrible. Anything with sugar, caffeine, or carbonation is bad, though, so watch out for your sodas, coffee, and even lemonade. If you feel strained or phlegmy, go for straight water and nothing else. How much is enough? The most intense of professional voice users, opera singers, have a saying: “pee clear, sing pure”. That’s not how I’d phrase it, but my answer would be, “lots”.
4. If you feel sick, take a slot off. I know you paid good money for this convention and each event, but a slot where you’re sick is wasted money, and you’re likely to spread your plague like a geeky Typhoid Mary. A couple extra hours of sleep is better for your health and everyone’s enjoyment of the rest of the convention.
5. If you are a DM or gamemaster, you also want to take extra care of your voice. This includes, but is not limited to: setting yourself up at your table so that you are facing a wall, avoiding high-noise areas as much as possible, staying away from using squeaky or affected voices, and carrying water with you at all times.
TL;DR – Keep your hands sanitized, stay fed and rested, drink lots of water, take a slot off if you feel sick, and take care of your voice.
- John

Want to know what’s going on? Please like us on Facebook, RSVP to our event U-Con 2012, join our email list. Please tell your friends about us. We need everyone’s help to bring in new friends and old friends this year. We hope you’ll join us to make this convention the biggest and best so far. See you there!
U-Con 2012 is really close now! We thought we should tell you about how the site is organized. Our space consists of the large ballroom on the first floor, a registration desk on the first floor, and nine conference rooms on the 2nd floor.
The best entrance to take is labeled with a black circle. The registration desk is right in front of that door, labeled with the star. If you take the hotel entrance, go past the lobby, veer to the right, and follow the hallway until you reach our registration desk.

Our first floor gaming space is just down the hall from the registration desk in the ballroom. We have divided up the ballroom into a few different areas, so please see the map on the right. The main entry way is from the bottom of the image, in the area with the flier table. There are open tables in this space for open gaming.
The door on the right leads to open gaming space and the Exhibitor Hall. That open gaming space here will be available the same hours as the exhibitor hall.
The left door leads to the area with several game libraries. Mayfair has Giant Settler running every couple ours as well as a few scheduled events and their game library. This area also boasts the Origins Awards Traveling Road Show. The OATRS library has some of the latest and most popular new games of the last few years! Finally, we have a third library, the U-Con Library, generously donated by game companies! The libraries provide a great way to try games before you decide to make a purchase. You can borrow a game for a generic ticket or show your Play Games ribbon.
The center door leads to the area for board games and miniatures. We have 45 tables for events, and we left space in the schedule so games don’t have to hurry up and clear out before the next game starts. There is extra room to play pickup games in here as well, but please give priority to all scheduled events.

The registration desk is adjacent to the stairs to the 2nd floor, and the elevator is just behind the stairs. We have nine conference rooms on the 2nd floor. During most of the convention, roleplaying events are scheduled here, with three notable exceptions. The first exception is that on Friday afternoon, board games are scheduled in some areas (before the ballroom is available). The second is that Amorphous Blob is hosting both board games and rpgs in their room in Conference D. The third exception is that all late night gaming, including space for pick-up games, is on the 2nd floor.
Conference A and Conference C are designated special event rooms. Conference A will host the gamer swap meet, the auction, seminars with guest of honor Jason Caminsky, and the screening of the Smithee awards. Conference C will host costuming seminars, a Live Action Role Play, and several special role-playing events. Conference D is the home of Amorphous Blog, and thus another place you can find board games in the conferences area. Conference B host the Living Arcanis events, as well as overflow space for other events. Conferences E and F are the home of role-playing games with independent GMs. The Board Room is the home of the Tekumel Track and a few special events. Conference G is the home of Game Base 7 Wolverines, who are running several different RPGs. Finally, Pathfinder Society will take up Conference H, the only room with enough space for it!
There is plenty of space to fill up your weekend with tons of games. Please come and join in the fun!
Whoa! U-Con starts in 9 days. We are making final arrangement: printing tickets, ordering shirts, jumping up and down from excitement. The final proof for the shirts is on the right!
Event submission closed over a week ago. If you got your events in, yey thank you! We love our GMs! If you didn’t get your event in, we still have some space we and we might be able to find you some space and post notices about your event. You can also bring your game and find players for pickup games; we suggesting hanging out in the games library area to look for players.
The closing of event submission, however, means it’s time for the con book! For those new, the con book is the ultimate listing of all the events. We provide physical copies of it onsite. However, for those who prefer electronic copies, or just want a preview, our 2012 con book is now available for download!
We updated the most of beginning section. New this year, we have policies for costumes and harassment. Please make a point of checking it out here or there.
See you in 9 days!
There are many dice like them, but these are my dice.
I don’t think that Gamers are any more superstitious than any other group but I have noticed that Gamers have very strong ties with their dice. It’s like any ritual a sports fan goes through before watching The Big Game or that lucky vest a hunter wears when they are sitting out in their blind. Does reciting that age old ditty or making sure your lucky tchotchke is on hand really increase the odds that good things will happen? Probably not…but you never know for certain. It seems almost Neanderthal to believe in crossed fingers and prayers to the traffic gods to keep that light green until you clear the intersection, but you do it anyway. In the end, the lizard part of your brain would feel much better if you would just go get the cheese hat and put it on. Continue reading These Are My Dice
