U-Con is always looking for people willing to volunteer their time to help put on the convention. We need people to help make U-Con a great gaming convention. If you are interested in being a Judge, please see the judges information. If you are otherwise interested in volunteering, read below.
How Does Volunteering Work?
You want to help out. Maybe you want to learn about how our convention works, or maybe you just want to spend less money. Whatever your reason, we could use some help. We want your time. We need volunteers to assist our convention staff and ensure everything runs smoothly. We have lots of odd jobs that require minimal training.
What Do Volunteers Get?
Volunteer Badge (4 hours)
We want you to have time for fun, so we only require 4 hours of your time for you to earn your free badge. Please pre-pay for your badge onsite or during preregistration. When you complete your hours, we’ll refund your paid badge and you can keep your volunteer badge.
Can’t prepay? No problem. We can schedule your time for early in the convention rather than having you prepay.
Concerned you can’t do some jobs? No problem. We can work with your skills and limitations. Advanced warning is appreciated.
Extra Effort (8 or 10 hours)
For those who want to go above and beyond, we want to thank you. For those who don’t want to, we have bribes! After you work your 8th volunteer hour, you earn a bonus gift from the list below. After your 10th hour of work, you get a 2nd item from the list.
- A “Play Games All Weekend” Ribbon – free games all weekend
- A free U-Con shirt (while supplies last)
- A free stylish U-Con bag (while supplies last)
We can also provide refunds on items already purchased (so you don’t have to worry that we’ll be out of your size shirt). Please ensure that the purchases you want refunded get recorded!
Our Gratitude
Volunteering takes a little time, but it’s pretty easy. It’s a great way to get to know your friendly neighborhood staff.
What do volunteers do?
The volunteer coordinator will work with you to schedule your volunteer hours. We typically work in 2-hour increments, so it is possible to split up your volunteering into several blocks or do it all at once. At the start of your shift, we’ll provide you with a volunteer badge. Possible tasks include:
Exhibitor Hall Guard:
Your job is to provide security for the Exhibitor Hall.
Ticket Pullers:
Your job is to work in ops, finding tickets that attendees want to purchase.
Greeter:
Your job is to greet guests outside ops and manage the flow of traffic.
Runner:
Walk around to scheduled events to pick up their tickets.
How do I sign up?
The first step is to contact the volunteer coordinator to join a moderated, low-traffic, spam-free email list. If at the convention you are feeling spontaneous and would like to volunteer, please contact staff at registration.
