‘Twas the Night Before U-Con…

And all through the house, not a creature was stirring…except for every GM putting the finishing touches on their game.  GOOD PENULTIMATE DAY to all you U-con people!  Tomorrow is the day we launch the first ever Virtual U-Con and I hope you are all as excited as I am. This is some strange new frontier indeed!

Today is a good day to take care of all those last minute details so that we all start U-Con 2020 out as fresh and prepared as we can. A couple things do carry over from U-Cons past:

  • You will want to have drinks and snacks on hand and remember to keep hydrated – even at home. Also, virtual U-Con allows you to fix yourself (or order yourself) a fancy meal or two (two a day is better, even with snacks) and it can be your favorite dish! Maybe this is the year dinner is always fabulous.
  • Get some sleep! We usually recommend 5 hours when we are running U-Con in the real world but COVID times are just weird. You might want to think about allowing a little extra time for everything, including sleep.
  • Have a good attitude – especially during this unprecedented time. There have been a lot of things happening recently and people are tired, grumpy, stir crazy or all three. Please keep this in mind and also please be patient with the new and unique problems online gaming brings to the table. Technology woes pop up when you least expect them.
  • Showering is generally important anyway so although you aren’t physically gaming with the people you normally might, I wouldn’t jettison the suggested 1 shower a day.

Virtual gaming brings with it a new set of checklists. Before tomorrow you will want to:

  • EVERYONE: Have you signed up for U-Con’s discord server? We are running communication through that so please create an account and join the Discord server today if you haven’t already. (Click for invite) Also, there is an elementary primer about Discord here.
  • EVERYONE: Last minute tech check. Is your wireless mouse/keyboard loaded with fresh batteries? Do you have a spare set? Does your headset and mic work? Camera? How is your internet connection?
  • GMs: Have you updated your VTT information so your players know where to go?
  • GMs Today is a good day to go over the rules for your game one last time to get them square in your mind before you run.
  • Players: Check the VTT info on the games you are attending and make sure you know the what, where and when of the games you have signed up for.

Lastly, we are actually starting things off TONIGHT with Game Trivia hosted by Nick Baker:

Tonight at 8 PM Eastern US Time, Nick B. will be hosting a board game & role-playing game trivia night for U-Con. This will be six rounds of trivia that everyone will be able to play along with on a web browser or their mobile devices. This event will be family friendly! Trivia Night will be broadcast on Nick’s Twitch channel https://www.twitch.tv/nyobari 8 PM ET this Thursday. Hope to see folks there!
