Helpful Checklist of Things not to Forget to Bring to U-Con

U-Con is coming up fast and if you are like me, you are trying to wrangle all the things you need to bring. I keep a spreadsheet of everything I need to pack (and I usually start gathering them several days ahead of time) but that is my system.  Stll, here’s a handy short list of suggested important items:

  • The games you are running. Consider doing a quick parts count before leaving to make sure you have everything.  If you wind up short a piece, you can always see if the Games Library has a copy of your game that you can borrow or reach out to the community and ask if anyone would mind loaning you their copy.
  • Any other games that you think you might like to have on hand.
  • Good shoes for walking.  A lot.
  • Layerable clothes. What’s the weather going to be like? It’s Michigan, who knows! One year it was pleasantly balmy, another there was at least a couple inches of snow.
  • Toiletries. Although there are nearby stores where you can buy replacements, it’s always nice to have everything on hand when you arrive.
  • Medications. If you have any you take, make sure they are in your go bag.
  • Snacks  There will be opportunities to purchase snacks but you might want to have a stash for the odd times the snacks service isn’t open.  Also, if you have specialty food needs you will probably want something on hand that you know you can eat.
  • Your Smart device.  If you are like me, it’s your alarm clock, your rules arbiter, your personal assistant that reminds you to do things and it’s your convenient gateway to purchasing any last minute tickets.
  • Cash. You will need cash for the auction but also it could come in handy for food or in the dealer’s room.
  • A water bottle.  You might not need one but they sure are convenient!

Is there anything I’ve forgotten to mention?  Let me know!

  • OH! I am reminded by Stewart T to bring writing devices and paper.
  • Cheryl O. says to bring a backpack for hauling your games and whatnot. Very wise.
  • Do you know what else I forgot to mention to bring to a gaming convention? Your favorite dice! That’s it, my gaming card is revoked.

  1. A backpack, or at least consider how to conveniently carry games and snacks and water bottle around.

  2. Old school, but writing utensils (pens, pencils, etc.) and paper. Because there’s always that one game that requires you to keep score, but doesn’t include the means for doing so. Sure, you could use your smart device, but sometimes old school is more convenient. Better to have a couple of pens and a small Post-It pad and not need them than the other way around.
